The Mountain Bike Route through the Wineyards and Mountains of LA RIOJA

Three Sierras and a River, these are the geographical elements that, together with your mountain bike, give form to FUENTES del VINO MTB. Sierra de Cameros, Sierra de La Demanda, Sierra de Cantabria -Montes Obarenes- and the Ebro River in the center articulating everything. A simply overflowing geography that is distributed homogeneously during the 4 days and the 282 kilometers of the route.

1st Stage, Portal de Cameros, American West environment between Islallana and Viguera - Sierra de Camero Nuevo -
2nd Stage, the Ezcaray Extrem BTT sharing track with FUENTES del VINO MTB - Sierra de La Demanda -
3rd Stage, Cellorigo and its Montes Obarenes on the plains of the Tirón River - Sierra de Cantabria -
4th stage, Ebro River and Vineyards Sea- Baños de Ebro -
2nd Stage, Camino de los Serranos, demanding path if we have chosen the technical alternative of the route. In the background the San Lorenzo Peak - Sierra de La Demanda -
3rd Stage, numerous sequences of "flow" in the Montes Obarenes - Sierra de Cantabria -
2nd Stage, arrival at Collado de Marrulla - Sierra de La Demanda -
4th Stage, we continue in the Sea of Vineyards as we pass through El Cortijo. On the horizon, the Sierra de Cantabria - Ebro Basin -
.

FUENTES del VINO MTB is the mountain bike route that will allow us in equal parts, navigate through the spectacular sea of La Rioja vineyards and ride along the trails of the Sierras that, like cliffs, fly over and feed this sea, the SOURCES of WINE.

We could say that the route is essentially rolling, since the common denominator of all the stages is a first section of small paved and unpaved roads which through crops and vineyards allow us to "eat kilometers" with relative ease and as if good gregarious ciclists were treated , they put us at the foot of the "wall" of the mountain range in front of which we will have to settle alone.

Once up and except in the last stage - the Ebro River - in which the above is not met as we will not have "wall", in the other 3 we can choose depending on our style of "bikers" if we descend by tracks and essentially easy and rolling paths, or if we decide on the options, but harder, at least if more technical, All Mountain we could say, that sometimes by technical sections, and sometimes of authentic "flow" deposit us in the same end points of stage as those of the more rolling options.

Stage 1: Logroño - Nájera - Distance 67 km / Unevenness 1.640 m

The stage is clearly divided into 2 sections, a first gently rising part, between Logroño and Portal de Cameros following the banks of the Iregua river and a second part in which the crops and vineyards that have shaped the landscape up to here, give way to the Sierra de Camero Nuevo with its mountain meadows and cattle. The "wall" begins.
In a section of this transition from basin to mountain we will have to push the bike for a scarce kilometer along a route usually used in descent. It is the "toll" that allows us to access the Sierra de Cameros and then reach Nájera having left from Logroño without a marathon stage.

Surroundings of Logroño. Among vineyards and crops we started pedaling

mtb-islallana-01

From Islallana the Sierra takes the lead, we could say that the cattle replaces the vineyard.

Hermitage of San Bartolome, a historical and geographical reference in the heart of Camero Nuevo. Better to ignore the bull.

Open land on the summits of Serradero.

Torrecilla en Cameros, if you want to "force the machine" ask us for the track that adds to this first stage the stretch of the old Roman road between Viguera and Torrecilla, roadway yes, but not to be wrong, 13 wild kilometers, for "pedestrians" and practically with the hollow just for a bike wheel. The result is a marathon, technical and very beautiful stage.

mtb-cameros-01

Towards the South, the high pastures of the Sierra de Camero Nuevo extend on the horizon, exerting a hinóptico power of call.

mtb-cameros-01

There is no doubt, we are in a space created for our bikes.

mtb-cameros-01

We reach the upper area of the Sierra, the landscape towards the opposite slope to which we have climbed can be impressive, we are in one of the "star" points of FUENTES del VINO MTB, the Najerilla Valley and the peaks of La Sierra de La Demanda take care of it.

mtb-cameros-01

The route continues for a long time over the Sierra de Camero Nuevo. If time permits, tomorrow's stage through the Sierra de La Demanda will accompany us as a backdrop for a few kilometers.

mtb-cameros-01

Again through small roads and vineyards we reach Nájera, from the Arabic "Naixara" place between mountains.

Up

Stage 2: Nájera - Ezcaray - Distance 62 km / Unevenness 1.940 m

Again the stage goes through a first part monopolized by the vineyard and then, in San Millán de la Cogolla face the "wall" of the Sierra de la Demanda to reach the territory of 2000 meters of altitude in the hills of San Lorenzo or in Portillo de Nestaza -according to the option we choose-
From the top of the Sierra de la Demanda to Ezcaray - 1,200 meters below - we expect a long descent of more than 20 kilometers interrupted only by a stretch ascending Marrulla Pass from where we expect one of the best descents type "flow" of all La Rioja.
In Spring and if the snow makes it impossible to pedal through the higher areas, the route is modified and the ascent to the Sierra from San Millán is made by another line with a maximum height of 1548 meters in the Marrulla pass.

We started the 2nd stage under the old look of the caves / refuge that characterize Nájera.

When the snow still remains on the highest peaks of the Sierra de La Demanda, we chose the track we call "Spring option" which replaces the passage through the San Lorenzo - 2003 meters of altitude - with the Marrulla Pass 500 meters lower.

Spring vineyards between Nájera and San Millán.

A stop on the road before the "wall" of Tres Cruces, Monastery of San Millán de la Cogolla, too much history for a day like today, ahead 24 kilometers of Mountain Pass with 1410 meters of ascent.

Intermediate point of the ascent to Tres Cruces, Collado Artaza already at 1829 meters between the Pancrudos and Cabeza Parda.

Reaching the highest point of the route on the San Lorenzo hillside, gentle but long slopes.

Highest stretch of FUENTES del VINO MTB. Environment pulling inhospitable in the high part of the Sierra de La Demanda.

Tres Cruces Mountain Pass, 1959 meters of altitude.

If we opt for the most technical option of the route we will replace the Tres Cruces Mountain Pass by the Portillo de Nestaza, which with its 2034 meters of altitude becomes the highest level of all the options of FUENTES del VINO MTB.

From the Portillo de Nestaza we can see the "Camino de los Serranos" line on the slope of La Cuña peak. In front we have 1200 meters of descent entirely by trails to Ezcaray.

Camino de los Serranos, demanding path if we have chosen the technical alternative of the route. In the background the San Lorenzo Peak.

When the snow still remains on the highest peaks of the Sierra de La Demanda, we chose the track we call "Spring option" and the highest point of the route will be the Marrulla Pass. We will reach it by the route that emerges from the forest and through which the participants of the "Ezcaray BTT Extrem 2018" ascend.

We continue with "Red carpet".

More "Red carpet". It will be difficult to find such a sequence of "flow for all audiences" anywhere else in La Rioja.

Today the end of the stage is in Mountain Village. Ezcaray seen from the hermitage of Santa Barbara.

Stage 3: Ezcaray - Haro - Distance 77 km / Unevenness 1.390 m

As in the first 2 stages, the first part of this third stage begins by crossing the Oja and El Tiron basins on flat terrain using small roads and paths between crops and vineyards. From Sajazarra the route begins to ascend towards Cellorigo, already located in the Sierra de Cantabria, and from this point begin the path that will take us to Peñalrayo, the highest peak of the Obarenes Mountains with its 953 meters. Será el momento de decidir que opción de la ruta realizamos, la rodadora o la técnica.
After traversing a good section of the Montes Obarenes, always oriented towards the east, the 2 options converge at the Hermitage of San Felices and descend together until the Haro "Barrio de la Estación" through the vineyards of Muga wineries.

Surroundings of Santo Domingo de la Calzada. We leave the Sierra de La Demanda and begin to cross the Oja and Tirón basins between crops and vineyards.

In Cuzcurrita del Río Tirón, the Obarenes Mountains to which we are heading begin to take their identity.

The castle and the village of Sajazarra warn us that we are leaving the basins and that the ascent to the Sierra de Cantabria begins.

Participants of the cycling tour "Hazla del Tiro BTT 2018" under the Montes Obarenes.

Cellorigo, the well-known "Pulpito de La Rioja". As soon as we arrive we will check it.

The Tirón and Cellorigo basins are already behind us, we are already in the Montes Obarenes.

In San Felices - the illuminated rock of the photograph - our march through the Sierra ends. We already started looking for the vineyards again, in this case, almost entirely from Bodegas Muga.

Today's stage ends in the city of Haro, the "Capital of Rioja". We will be able to verify it when crossing in our last kilometer of route the famous "Barrio de la Estación" with its impressive accumulation of wineries.

Stage 4: Haro - Logroño - Distance 76 km / Unevenness 1.130 m

The last stage is "the one of the Ebro", the old "Iber" that gave name to all the Iberian Peninsula. We will pedal constantly among vineyards perimetrating the meanders that shape the river in a continuous succession of monumental towns such as San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Baños de Ebro, Elciego or Lapuebla de Labarca.
Without any doubt the atmosphere will be "River and Wine" with vineyards, huts or guardaviñas and countless wineries scattered throughout the landscape among which undoubtedly we will be surprised by the spectacular "Guggenheim" building of Marqués de Riscal.

We bid farewell to the Montes Obarenes, pedaling from the beginning of the day through the meanders of the Ebro in Briñas.

Obligatory stop at the Castle and fortified village of San Vicente de la Sonsierra.

It is clear, strategic position for the Castle of San Vicente. We back to the vineyard.

The Chozos or Guardaviñas will appear sequentially throughout the stage.

The track runs parallel to the river, sometimes it will be dirt roads or tracks and other small asphalted roads often dotted with agricultural remains, stones and mud left by tractors.

Spectacular and unique Chozo of the vineyard "La Veguilla".

Many points of "obligatory stop" in this 4th stage, Bodegas Marqués de Riscal in Elciego. Behind, Laguardia.

Finca Vi&ntild;a Lanciano from Bodegas LAN at the end of autumn. Located in an impressive meander of the Ebro, it is one of the most unique vineyards of the Rioja Denomination.

The same place a few months later.

In the vicinity of Logro&ntild;o the Ebro is still a lonely river.

WHAT YOU ARE INTERESTED TO KNOW IF YOU WANT TO CYCLE THE ROUTE

The proposal of LA RIOJA PUNTO BIKE for FUENTES del VINO MTB is roughly a Self Guided Route Pack in which the Accommodations, the Tracks of the route and the Transport of Luggage from hotel to hotel are included.

Before starting the route, we made a Briefing at the Hotel FG Logroño, in which, in addition to transmitting more details of what you will find along the route, we give you our Welcome Pack.

During the days in route we also give Telephone Assistance to solve problems that may arise or simply to discuss details of the stage to come.

Being as we are in LA RIOJA with its glamorous universe of Vineyards and Wineries, we give the option when configuring the Packages to access a LUXURY option in which we climb a rung the level of the accommodations in relation to the standard format that we call COMFORT.

Below we show our usual selection of accommodations for FUENTES del VINO MTB. However, since in LA RIOJA the hotel reservations are usually complicated at certain times of the year - especially during the harvest - the Pack proposal that we finally offer may differ from the one presented here.

"Booking in advance is in this case something more than a commercial trick, it makes the difference between being able or not being able to do the route."

1st night: - Hotel FG Logroño -  Regardless of the option that we configure, COMFORT or LUXURY, we have chosen this hotel located on the banks of the Ebro for our days in Logroño. In addition to its unbeatable location and its good disposition towards everything related to cycling, its quality is indisputable, we are talking about a four-star service "camouflaged" in one of three.
To the usual services of a hotel of these features we add that we have free access to the relaxation of the hotel zone, which consists of a jacuzzi, sauna and gym.

If we have chosen the Pack in LUXURY format during our stay in Ezcaray we will stay at Echaurren Hotel, a 4 * establishment with Bikefriendly category. In its culinary version we are in one of the "sanctuaries" of modern gastronomy, we do not forget that its Chef, Francis Paniego, "accumulates" 3 Michelin stars, something that to a greater or lesser extent - depending on what we want - will inevitably be transferred to our Pack.

End of route: We will finish the route at the same point where we started it, the FG LOGROÑO Hotel. Optionally we can book one last night and end our trip knowing Logroño with tranquility. In any case, even without staying one more night, we can use the hotel facilities to shower before starting our return trip. The FG LOGROÑO Hotel will also be the place where you will have received our luggage at the last stage of the route.

Up

The budget for the route depends on the number of participants since some costs are fixed regardless of how many cyclists participate, it also varies depending on the dates and hotels that are finally hired, because although usually these are those in the list of the Hotel tab, sometimes, due to availability issues, it is necessary to change them for others.

To guide the price of a course for 4 cyclists with 4 nights of hotel to Half Board staying at the establishments listed below is 445 € per person.

  • 1st night: Logroño - Hotel FG Logroño, 3 Star +
  • 2nd night: Nájera - Hostal Hispano
  • 3rd night: Ezcaray - Hotel Iguareña, 2 Star
  • 4th night: Haro - Hotel Arrope, 3 Star +

In addition to Half Board accommodation in a double room, this budget also includes the Transportation of Luggage between hotels, the Briefing prior to the beginning of the route, the Welcome Pack, the Tracks with their variants depending on the type of "biker" and the Telephone assistance during the days of route.

If you want to define your budget, call us or simply send us a question indicating the number of participants, the dates of the trip and the Pack style - COMFORT or LUXURY - which you prefer.

All the proposals presented on this website are sold through Pirineos PUNTO BIKE
Travel Agency registered in the Tourism Registry of Navarra with registration code: CI. NA-128

  • Best time to go: The route can be done at any time of the year as long as there is no snow in the high mountains. The altitude of the Sierra de La Demanda stage is 500 meters above the rest of the stages, so for the occasions when the snow covers these high areas blocking the entire route, we have the option that we call "spring" in which we modify the track by deviating it by lower levels.

Spring and autumn are usually the most pleasant seasons; In summer it can be hot in the low areas, if it is the case, it is advisable to get up early and have the whole afternoon to relax. Actually, excluding winter, we can conclude that it is more important the punctual weather of the days in which we are going to make the route than the season itself.

At the end of autumn the days are short, but more than enough for our purpose. The vineyards of La Rioja "burn" red in those days, and the experience of descending from the Sierras at dusk to join that sea of vineyards becomes almost "brutal".
  • Type of tracks: In general, trails and tracks with more physical than technical demand, both uphill and downhill.
For stages 2 and 3 we have more technical variants in which the path sections are increased n the same way as the difficulty of the route.
  • Ideal bike: Any mountain bike (btt). The choice will depend on the priorities of each one: lower weight (rigid bike) or greater comfort and enjoyment of the descents (double suspension bike).
  • Orientation: The route is followed by a GPS track.
  • Ciclability: Depending on the technical skills and the strengths of each one, the route is 90% cyclable.
  • Philosophy: The route is designed so that the stages can be completed and we still have a large part of the day to enjoy the place where we are.
  • Provisioning: In all the first parts of the stages you pass through one or more villages where you can stop to eat and catch water. Once we go to the Sierras we must be self-sufficient in terms of food. In the tracks we add georeferenced information from sources, although according to the year we should be careful, since they may be dry.

Up

  • Airport/station pick up
  • Hire Accident Insurance
  • Add a hotel night at the finalising point of the route
  • To replace the night before the start of the route per night at the end of the route
  • Single room supplement: + 160 € - estimated price for a CONFORT option
When the group is made up of an odd number of people, will be equally necessary an odd number of requests to access this supplement
